Health coaching is becoming easier to package, automate, and sell cheaply – but your certification can actually be the foundation for something much bigger. In this episode, Michelle shares three ways to move beyond a traditional health coaching practice by drawing on your previous experience, connecting your work to outcomes people already want, and rethinking what your business could look like altogether. You’ll also hear why “health coach” may be better used as a tool than a job description.

Don’t Just Be a Health Coach: 3 Ways to Build Something Bigger
If you’re “just” a health coach, you’re at risk of being replaced.
Not because your work isn’t valuable, but because health coaching itself is becoming commoditized.
Health coaching now comes bundled with wearable devices for $27 a month. People use ChatGPT for health advice. Meanwhile, job postings can attract hundreds of applicants while offering around $18 an hour and requiring advanced credentials.
That’s what happens when health coaching becomes a generic service delivered by a bot, added to an app, or handed to the lowest-cost qualified applicant.
This doesn’t mean you should stop using your health coaching skills. It means you may need to stop treating “health coach” as the full extent of what you can become.
Your certification may be more valuable as a tool than as a job description.
Combine Health Coaching With Your Previous Experience
When I left advertising in 2009, I became a successful health coach. But my business really came together when I combined health coaching with my background in marketing, design, and communication.
Your certification doesn’t erase your previous career or life experience. It adds another layer to it.
Someone coming from finance, pharmacy, teaching, engineering, or research has a different business available to them than someone trying to compete as a generic wellness coach.
Ask yourself: What becomes possible when I combine health coaching with what I already know?
Your previous experience may be what makes your business more credible, useful, and difficult to replace.
Sell the Outcome People Want (Even if it’s Not Health Related)
I recently met a woman who specializes in nervous system regulation. But she doesn’t introduce herself as a nervous system health coach.
Instead, she helps high-earning women entrepreneurs scale their businesses without being crushed by the pressure of running them.
Nervous system regulation is the method. Business growth is the outcome they already want.
That is very different from saying, “I’m a health coach for female entrepreneurs.”
This is what I teach inside my Good Niche training. We go beyond choosing an ideal client and look at what people already want, what they’ll pay to solve, and how your experience can make your business more distinctive.
Don’t lead with what you are. Lead with what you help people do.
Consider How You Can Create an Impact – Without Coaching?
Traditional coaching asks you to attract the audience, sell the offer, deliver the service, and then start over again.
But what if the audience itself became the business asset?
Imagine you’re a menopause-focused health coach. Instead of relying entirely on one-to-one coaching, you could create a trusted destination for women navigating menopause. You might publish content, build a community, host events, and recommend relevant products and services. Revenue could come from sponsorships, advertising, affiliate commissions, partnerships, events, and coaching as one part of a larger business.
You’d still be helping women and using your health coaching knowledge. But your income would no longer depend entirely on how many sessions you can personally deliver.
Your Certification Is a Tool, Not a Job Description
You can combine health coaching with your previous expertise. You can position your work around a bigger outcome people already want. You can build an audience-driven business instead of relying only on private clients.
It starts by separating yourself from generic, commoditized health coaching.
Your certification is not your job description. It’s a tool.
The bigger question is what you’re going to build with it.
Get my Good Niche training to uncover what people already want, what they’ll pay to solve, and how your professional and life experience can make your business different from every other health coach’s.
