Your next health coaching referral might come from…ChatGPT? More consumers are asking AI for help with their specific needs – which creates a huge new opportunity for health coaches who know how to make their expertise visible. In this episode, Michelle talks with AI search strategist Vivienne Wagner about how AI decides who to recommend, why clear positioning matters more than ever, and what your website, reviews and online presence need to communicate.

AI Referrals for Health Coaches: How ChatGPT Can Help New Clients Find You
Health coaches are always asking how to get more referrals. Traditionally, that meant building relationships with doctors, other practitioners, former clients, or local businesses.
Now there’s another referral source entering the picture: AI.
More people are asking ChatGPT and other AI tools for help with their very specific needs. That creates a big opportunity for health coaches whose businesses are easy for AI to understand.
ChatGPT Is Becoming a Referral Source for Health Coaches
Think about how people used to search for help. They might Google “health coach near me,” click through several websites, and try to figure out who seemed like the best fit.
Now someone can ask ChatGPT something much more specific: “Can you recommend a health coach near me who understands perimenopause, and won’t put me on another restrictive diet?”
That’s a very different kind of search.
Instead of simply presenting a list of websites, AI can interpret the question and recommend a smaller number of professionals it believes are relevant to that specific person.
AI Can’t Refer Clients If It Doesn’t Understand Your Health Coaching Business
This is where things get interesting for health coaches.
ChatGPT may be able to find your website, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it understands what you do. If your messaging says you “help women feel their best” or “support clients on their wellness journey,” there isn’t much there for AI to work with.
The clearer you are about who you help, what problems you address, and how you work, the easier it becomes for AI to match you with the right person.
Clear Health Coach Positioning Matters More Than Ever
This is something I’ve been saying to health coaches for years, long before ChatGPT entered the conversation.
Trying to appeal to everyone makes your marketing weaker. And now it makes it harder for AI to recommend you.
If you specialize in menopause, digestive health, GLP-1 support, blood sugar, autoimmune conditions, or another specific area, say so.
If you work with a particular kind of client, say that too.
Specificity gives both humans and AI a reason to understand where you fit.
Your Health Coaching Website Needs to Show Why Clients Should Trust You
AI also needs evidence.
Your health coaching website should clearly explain your experience, credentials, approach, services, and the kinds of results you help clients achieve. Case studies, podcast appearances, professional affiliations, and other signs of expertise can all help build a clearer picture of your business.
A lot of health coaches have years of valuable professional and personal experience but barely mention it online.
If it isn’t visible, AI can’t use it.
Online Reviews Can Help AI Understand Your Health Coaching Services
Reviews aren’t just about collecting five stars.
A detailed review can tell both a potential client and an AI system what someone came to you for, what it was like to work with you, and what changed as a result.
“Michelle is amazing!” is nice.
“I came to Michelle after leaving my corporate career and struggling to find clients for my new health coaching practice” tells a much richer story for AI to draw from.
Helpful Content Can Build AI Visibility
You don’t need to publish endless amounts of content.
One thorough article answering an important question your ideal client is asking may be more useful than dozens of generic posts. For example, a coach who supports women using GLP-1 medications could create a comprehensive resource about maintaining healthy habits, adequate nutrition, and muscle mass while taking those medications.
That gives AI something substantial to learn from.
It also gives potential clients a reason to trust you before they ever book a call.
AI Search Doesn’t Mean SEO Is Dead
Traditional search engine optimization still matters.
AI tools need information to pull from, and your website still needs to be accessible, organized, and understandable. The difference is that being “findable” may no longer be enough.
You also want to be recommendable.
That means your online presence needs to clearly answer the question: Why would this health coach be the right person for this particular client?
You Can Test Whether ChatGPT Understands Your Business
Here’s a simple exercise.
Give ChatGPT your website and ask, “Based only on this website, who do you think I help, what do I help them with, and why should someone choose me?”
Then look closely at the answer.
If it gets your business wrong, leaves out something important, or describes you in vague terms, that’s useful information. Your website may not be communicating your positioning as clearly as you think.
You can also try asking ChatGPT the kinds of questions your ideal clients might ask when looking for support.
Would your business be a logical recommendation?
AI Referrals Are an Opportunity for Health Coaching Businesses
This is the part I find exciting.
You don’t necessarily need the biggest audience, the most followers, or the largest marketing budget to benefit from this shift. A small health coaching business that is specific, credible, and genuinely useful may be exactly what someone is looking for.
AI has the potential to connect a very particular person with a very particular practitioner.
(That’s pretty close to what a great human referral has always done!)
Your Next Health Coaching Referral Could Come From AI
This isn’t about chasing another algorithm.
It’s about making sure your business clearly communicates who you are, what you know, who you help, and why your work matters.
Because your next client may not hear your name from a friend, a doctor, or another coach.
They may hear it from ChatGPT.
