Your health coaching business might feel hard right now because you’re trying to convince people that they need a health coach instead of filling an existing need they’re already looking for help with.
In this episode, I share what a trip to Drybar taught me about getting clients effortlessly. Spoiler: it has everything to do with solving problems people are already willing to pay for.
We talk about:
- Why Drybar doesn’t apologize for only doing blowouts
- How to become a “category of one” in your health coaching business
- The difference between what people want (a blowout, pre-pregnancy jeans that fit) vs. what we’re selling (health coaching)
- Why working with clients NOW is the fastest way to figure out your niche
If you’re tired of convincing people they need you, this episode will show you how to position yourself so clients come to you ready and excited.

What Getting a Blowout Taught Me About Getting Clients
Over Christmas, my niece and I went to Drybar in Midtown Manhattan for blowouts. If you have curly or wavy hair, you know exactly why this felt like a treat.

While we were deciding which style to get from their menu, I noticed something printed right at the top: No cuts, no color. That’s it. That’s all they do. Blowouts. And they make no apologies for it.
Somehow, Drybar turned one very specific part of hairstyling into an entire business. They didn’t worry about people who wanted perms or highlights or men’s haircuts. They focused on women like me who want smooth, shiny, gorgeous hair in 45 minutes flat.
And here’s where it connects to health coaching.
Solving Problems People Already Have
Drybar’s founder, Alli Webb, was a longtime stylist with curly hair herself. She had personal and professional experience with the frustration curly-haired women face when they just want a good blowout—nothing else, no cut, no color, and they don’t want to pay for anything extra.
She saw an existing frustration and built a business around solving it.
Alli scaled from a single shop to over 150 locations. Now, Drybar isn’t just a salon. It became what’s called a “category of one.” When you’re the only business in your category, you don’t compete. You don’t have to convince anyone. Clients come to you excited and ready to pay because they already know they want what you’re selling.
That’s exactly what happened with us. I thought blowouts, I thought Drybar, and we were booked.
People Don’t Wake Up Wanting a Health Coach
If you’ve been listening to recent episodes, you know I keep coming back to this: people don’t walk around wishing they could find a health coach today.
But curly girls do want a blowout.
Moms do want their pre-pregnancy pants to fit.
Retirees do want their joints to stop hurting so they can walk their dog by the river.
Executives do want to be more productive.
Do you see where I’m going with this?
Inside Empowered, my small group mastermind, I help health coaches find an existing need and fill it to become their own category of one. If you’re interested in that kind of support, email the word “Empowered” to michelle@healthcoachpower.com.
The Magic Happens When You’re Working With Clients
Here’s the thing: we can think our way through this all day long. We can journal about who we should serve and what people might want in our little bubble.
But the magic happens when you’re actually working with and talking to clients every day. That’s when you start hearing what they’re really looking for, where they’re getting frustrated, and specifically what’s motivating them to take out their wallets.
So start now. Even if you’re not sure what your version of Drybar looks like yet.
Start working with clients tomorrow so you can figure this out by actually doing the work and having those conversations. Download my free guide, 10 Easy Offers You Can Earn With Right Away, at https://HealthCoachPower.com/Easy.
Start making offers. Start working with people. Even if you don’t have a perfect niche or a super comprehensive program. The rest will become clear as you go.
And as you talk with clients and notice their frustrations, that’s your path to becoming your own category of one. Where you don’t compete for clients. They show up happy, ready to pay you. Maybe they even bring their niece.

Michelle Leotta:
Welcome to the Health Coach Power Community Podcast. I'm Michelle Leotta, ex corporate girl turned certified health coach with over 15 years of experience growing a successful online practice. I started out with no idea what I was getting into and learned a lot of lessons along the way that have given me the freedom to do the work I love and raised two boys as a single mom.
I created a health coach power community over a decade ago to make it easier for health coaches to build a career they love and make the world a better place.
Your help coaching business might feel hard right now because you're trying to convince people that they need a help coach instead of filling an existing need that they're already looking for help with. In this episode, I'm gonna show you exactly what it means to approach your help coaching business from the client's perspective and bring them to your door effortlessly.
Over Christmas, my niece and I went to Drybar in Midtown Manhattan to get blowouts. It was awesome. It was a gift for her, but it was also kind of a gift for me. If you have curly hair, if you have wavy hair, then you know what I'm talking about. Nothing beats a good blowout. And we got to choose our blowout styles.
They actually have a menu. So while we were hemming and hawing over that big decision, what kind of blowout are we gonna get? I noticed that the menu clearly stated, no cuts, no color. I mean all they do at Drybar are blowouts. And that's why I took her there. Instead of like just gonna any old salon, I'm like, we're gonna get blowouts.
We have to go to Drybar, no cuts, no color, and they don't make any apologies for that. Somehow they've turned this one very specific aspect of hairstyling. Into an entire business. They didn't worry about people who wanted perms or people who wanted highlights, or men who wanted a haircut. They cater to women like me and my niece who want their hair smooth, shiny, and gorgeous in 45 minutes and that's it.
That's what they do. So this has everything to do with how to get clients as a health coach. Stay with me. We are getting to it. But first, if you're not already familiar with Drybar, the backstory is that their founder, her name is Alli Webb. She was a longtime stylist. She had her own curly hair. Please hear that she had personal experience and she had professional experience with the needs of curly haired women.
She understood the frustration as very unique to this group of women where you'll want a good blowout, and you don't want anything else. You don't wanna cut, you don't want to color on a given day, you just don't wanna pay for anything else. You just wanna get your hair straightened. So in other words, she saw this existing frustration.
She built a business around solving it, solving that exact problem. Now, Alli Webb scaled from a single shop into a massive brand with over 150 locations. Drybar isn't a salon. They became like a different kind of business altogether. They made themselves into what sometimes you're called a category of one.
And when you do that, when you are the only business in a category, you don't compete with anyone. You don't have to compete; you're the only one doing it. And when you solve an existing problem that people are already willing to pay for, already want to pay for, are already trying to pay for, you don't have to convince them.
Wouldn't that be nice? It is a beautiful, beautiful thing. It means you spend far less time marketing yourself and clients come to you and they're excited to come to you, and they're not skeptical, 'cause they already know that they want the thing that you sell. That's why I thought blowouts, I thought dry bar boom.
We made the appointments we were in. I didn't even think about anywhere else that we could go. 'cause I knew they had exactly what I was looking for. Now, if you've been listening to some of the recent episodes of this podcast, you know, I keep coming back to this idea that people don't walk around just wishing that they could find a health coach today.
But curly girls do want a blowout, and moms do want their pre-pregnancy pants to fit. And retirees, they do want their joints to stop hurting so that they can walk their dog by the river and go out. Dancing executives do want to be more productive. Do you see where I'm going with this? I help health coaches inside Empowered, which is my small group mastermind, find an existing need and fill it to become a category of one.
And if you're interested in that kind of support, by all means, you can email the word Empowered to me at michelle@healthcoachpower.com. Now here's the thing with becoming your own version of Drybar, we can like think our way through it. Hmm. What should I do? What should I do? Who can I serve? We can think about what people want in our little bubble, you know, we can journal about it.
But what I find is that the magic happens when, and again, we can take a lesson here from Alli Webb. It's when you're actually working with and you're talking to clients every day. You could start hearing. What they're really looking for, where they're getting frustrated, you know? And for health coaches within the whole world of health and wellness, what is it that is really motivating these people, is really driving them and more specifically driving them to take out their wallets.
